6 DAYS UMBWE ROUTE

Tour Overview

The Umbwe Route is often considered the most challenging way to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its steep and direct path, this route pushes climbers to their physical and mental limits. The rapid ascent to higher altitudes means there is little time for proper acclimatization, which increases the risk of altitude sickness. Because of this, the Umbwe Route has a lower summit success rate compared to other routes and is best suited for experienced hikers who are in excellent physical condition and confident in their ability to acclimatize quickly.
The Umbwe Route is designed for seasoned climbers looking for a challenge and an off-the-beaten-path experience. While it’s one of the most physically demanding routes, it rewards climbers with a sense of solitude and the opportunity to conquer Kilimanjaro via a less-traveled path. Due to the steep climb and the quick elevation gain, it’s recommended only for those who are well-prepared and ready to take on a tough ascent.

ITINERARY

Upon your arrival, our driver from Kilimanjaro Select will be waiting to meet you. You will be escorted to the vehicle, where your luggage will be loaded, and then driven to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. After checking in, you will receive a detailed briefing about your trek. Your mountain guide will also conduct an inspection of your equipment. If any items are missing, you will have the opportunity to rent them on this day.

• Elevation: 5,249 ft to 9,514 ft

Leave Moshi at 8 a.m. for Umbwe Gate, where you will be met by our porters, guides, and cooks who will accompany you on your six-day trip to Africa's roof, Uhuru Peak. Once you arrive, wait at the gate while the porters and guides finish their preparations and we record your ascent. About six hours from the gate is Cave Bivouac Camp, where you will arrive on your first day. There are some slick spots on the high slope. Trek through the cloud forest of Kilimanjaro, where trees are coated in moss. Later in the journey, the woodland will thin, revealing heathers, long grasses, and wildflowers.

• Elevation: 9,514 ft to 13,044 ft
• Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
• Distance: 6 km | 4 miles
• Habitat: Heath
• Meals: Full Board

The trail continues along the ridge for the first part. Leave the woodland and proceed through open moorlands until you arrive at Barranco Camp. The Umbwe Trail's most picturesque campsite is Barranco, which is encircled by enormous lobelias and senecios. The sun rises later at Barranco than it does at the other campgrounds because it is in a valley.

• Elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft
• Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
• Distance: 5 km | 3 miles
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
• Meals: Full Board

After breakfast, depart Barranco Camp for Karanga Valley. A 1.5-hour climb up the Barranco Wall kicks off the day. This is the most difficult section of the day, and you might need to use your hands to help you climb in some spots. Hike through somewhat level terrain after reaching the summit, then descend quickly yet steeply into the verdant Karanga River Valley.

• Elevation: 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft
• Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
• Distance: 4 km | 2 miles
• Habitat: Alpine Desert

We depart from the Karanga camp in order to get at the junction of the Mweka Descent Trail. From here, we continue up to the Barafu Hut. The Southern Circuit, which offers views of the peak from various angles, is now complete. In camp, we might unwind, have dinner, and get ready for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are plainly visible from this position.

Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
• Elevation: 19,341 ft to 10,065 ft
• Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
• Distance: 12 km | 7 miles
• Habitat: Rain Forest
• Meals: Full Board

Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Hike by the light of your headlamp for the next six hours. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail is very steep until you reach the crater rim at Stella Point. The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately one hour. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy views of the mountain, crater, clouds and glaciers. At Barafu Camp, eat breakfast and take a short break. You still have another three to five hours to go before reaching Mweka Camp.

• Elevation: 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft
• Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
• Distance: 10 km | 6 miles
• Habitat: Rain Forest
• Meals: Full Board

You will receive your summit certificates at the Mweka Park Gate, which signifies the conclusion of your Mount Kilimanjaro trip, after breakfast. It may be wet and muddy at lower elevations. Trekking poles and gaiters will be useful tools. As long as you have rain gear and warmer clothes on hand, t-shirts and shorts will work just fine. We will drive back to your accommodation in Arusha or Moshi for an Overnight stay.
